Two Recent Deaths in Chicago Motorcycle Accidents
Two Chicago men are dead in as many weeks because of motorcycle accidents in town. In the Margate Park neighborhood of the North Side of Chicago around 10 p.m. last Wednesday, one man was in a fatal accident. In late September, another man was in a motorcycle crash on the far South Side, and also died as a result of the accident. There have been several other Chicago deaths recorded this year due to motorcycle accidents, and many could be prevented. Each time one of these devastating stories is reported, we should be reminded of the necessity of motorcycle safety.
Exercise extreme caution on the road
There are several variables on the open road when you are driving (or riding as a passenger) on a motorcycle. With the wind whipping around you, these vehicles can feel liberating. It is imperative, however, to remain vigilant and cautious any time you are out on your bike. Motorcycle accidents have a high fatality rate, which has steadily been on the rise since 2004. In 2013, there were 4,668 motorcyclists killed in accidents – many of which could likely have been avoided. Motorcycle crashes with moving vehicles were responsible for the most fatalities. Illinois law does not currently require protective headwear on a motorcycle, but it should be top on your list of safety items when riding. Passengers on your motorcycles should wear helmets, as well. Make sure you consistently obey traffic laws.
Watch out for hazardous roadways and keep an eye out for debris on the road. If you are in the downtown area of Chicago where roads are densely populated and full of traffic, it remains important to pointedly follow all safety precautions and rules. Slower speed limits in town might make it seem less likely to have a motorcycle crash, but one can never be too safe. Avoid racing, and refrain from weaving in and out of traffic in an attempt to decrease commute time or showcase biking skills.
